There is some amount of confusion on how Infantrymen carry their greatcoat. The common belief is that the coat was rolled and strapped to the top of the soldier’s knapsack. The regulations of the time do not support this. They talk of greatcoats being rolled for display on shelves in quarters and also being rolled by Calvary soldiers. But the regulations state the coat is folded and placed in between the flaps of the knapsack. But regulations or not, it is a fair assumption that soldiers would have rolled their coats and strapped them on top of the knapsacks for times other than knapsack inspection.
So below is instructions on how to fold and roll the greatcoat for both carrying positions.
